12 February 2019,Wanaka to Lumsden, New Zealand – 334 miles

It rained last night, when I set off the roads were drying quickly, although caution was needed where the road remained in shade.

Clouds hanging low on the hills. Last night’s rain did little to help the grass turn back to green

This was a longer day’s ride that I would have liked. I wanted to spend time at Milford Sound, unfortunately the lack of accommodation forced to make a quick visit and then ride 120 miles to the hotel.

Milford Sound seems to have it’s own micro climate. It rain for 20 miles before I arrived and the same on the way back

If you travel to the South Island there is a lack of accommodation in the tourist areas, this will force you to plan ahead. This is not something I like to do, I like to wander and travel as little or far as the fancy takes me.

The accommodation in Lumsden was basic, although clean, comfortable and economic.

Martin, originally from the UK, riding a BMW R1200GSA was staying at the same place. It was good to have some company and talk bikes over dinner and a pint.

Fabulous scenery and good bike roads
