Villarrica Volcano

South to Patagonia, and an active volcano

Friday 3 March 2023 – 231Km

The day started with 139Km of motorway before heading North East on good tarmac roads to the town of Villarrica. An easy ride to reacquaint myself with riding in South America.

Villarrica sits on the shore of Villarrica Lake and is overlooked by Villarrica Volcano, the volcano is one of the most active in South America, the last major eruption was in 1985. During the later part of 2022 and earlier this year there have been a number of small explosions and earthquakes prompting the Chilean authorities to put out an alert for a possible eruption. It was all quiet on the night I was there.

Villarraci is a small picturesque tourist town with black beaches, presumable from past volcanic activity. The weather was warm with a clearing blue sky, perfect for a walk before dinner. Dinner was in a pleasant restaurant on a Main Street away from the lake front.

We stayed in a small hotel overlooking the lake, it had a secure underground car park for the bike. Tomorrow we ride to Bariloche.
